Dear all,

please tell us which features you think this site is missing (except content - that you should fix yourselves).

Dear Soeren,

maybe you could add some formatting help for the submission of the projects. (Inserting url, tables etc.)

Is there a way to create new threads? Change your password? Also, stats other than when it was added about the projects would be helpful, such as number of people working on it, activity monitor, programming language and license, directly on the overview page.

sebi ( on October 12, 2007, 16:00:38 )

I just discovered the "new thread" window, sorry about that. Nevertheless it might be a good idea to include a link there on the left sidebar, and maybe incorporate the "login/logout" buttons in the menu in the top right-hand side corner.

The "browse by ..." option is not very illuminating (or I do not get it ...) as (1) the author's name/licence etc. do not appear in the list and (2) it is not clear (to me) how the packages are actually ordered. A search option might be of great help.

Is it possible to add the author's full name to the overview page?

Instead of comments for the packages, you might also allow threads, so that you can reply to a particular comment.

@sebi and @nkraemer: Your suggestions make a lot of sense. We need some kind of user page where people can modify settings of their account (even a real name would be great). Regarding the formatting of the projects and comments (so far not the forum): One can use markdown syntax documented here http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax . And adding a further fields in the project list summary will definitely clarify sorting.

First things first: Great to have a webpage for ML open source software!

Despite being a fan of minimalistic design, I find the start page of mloss.org too minimalistic. The start page should at least contain the key points: * what is this about? if I want to search for machine learning software, I should click on the "software" link if I want to post my own software, I should click on xyz (maybe it would even be a good idea to put a "post my software" on the frontpage)

Browsing the repository: Currently, there are not many entries in the repository. Hopefully, this will be a huge page soon. Then, it might be better to just have a list of headlines, instead of full descriptions. Also, when browsing by author, I would find it more appealing to have entries clearly grouped by author's name (instead of the list that is visually indentical to the list with the default sorting criterion) And: as already noted by sebi, the sort criterion "license" is not even visible!

Well there is a rational to not have everything on the front page. I was hoping that we at some point will have the say top 10 latest additions/updates shown on the front page. Especially the about button is clearly visible if you want to know what this is all about - no ? :-) But I think it makes a lot of sense to re-enable the FAQ button (it is currently just hidden) and answering exactly the points you were asking for.

Regarding the software list. There will be a 'next' button appearing when we have > 10 projects so it should not be a problem to see the long description, of course we could ask the authors for an additional short one just for the listing. Ahh and a fulltext search is probably a good idea too. And maybe one should do the order by stuff like the head of the list (and display all items one can order by - similar to a spreadsheet table).

sonne ( on October 13, 2007, 06:53:27 )

and let me add this forum also needs markdown syntax support...

Some unsorted remarks:

A full text search is a great idea, or keywords for every package.

Actually, the "about" button is not clearly visible. First, at least to me, the title "about" is misleading. I thought that it was some sort of leagal notice. Second, as it is the last button, it seemed to me less important. Maybe, you should switch "About" and the News Items of the start page.

When you browse by some criterion, it would be nice if it was possible to sort it in ascending and descending order.

Suppose that I want to inform people about an update of my software. Should I add a new project (rather not), or should I add some remarks to the old project? In the latter case, the project description will probably get very long and unstructured. Maybe the project page should always refer to the latest version, and you could add an archive for each project called "Changes from the previous version".

Maybe you could add some guidelines what good open source software is.

Please add a "login in" button after the "Post a Reply" header, otherwise, I have to search for this button, and then search for the thread I want to post to.

To me, the description window for submitting projects seems too small.

What is a "tag"?

How do I cite the software that I put on mloss.org? For the project that I submitted, I added a bibtex entry myself, but in general, it would be nice to have a canonical bibtex entry for mloss.

In addition to comments, you might also add a thread called "questions" or so, where people can ask questions like "how do I do this and that with that software". Hopefully, the maintainer of the project takes care of the questions (e.g. you could notify the maintainer after a question has been posted).
